Drummer Kevin Crabb has been performing with his trio at The Bistro Garden in Studio City every Thursday from 7:30 to 11pm, starting in May.

On the evening I stopped by Crabb's trio consisted of the marvelous pianist David Garfield and the equally marvelous bassist Jennifer Leitham. They all sounded wonderful. The Bistro Garden is a very elegant restaurant and I understand they have an exquisite menu. The dining room is modeled after a European-style winter garden. The food served is contemporary. French-Continental cuisine. The restaurant is celebrating its 15^th anniversary. As you walk in, the trio is performing in a cozy bar area. There is a baby grand piano, which was put to good use by Garfield.

I caught the trio's late set and a small but enthusiastic audience was on hand to hear some great jazz played by very talented musicians. The set opened with "Nica's Dream," done in an easy tempo. Garfield was just amazing at the piano, Leitham's solid bass playing a delight and Crabb kept a steady, airy groove going. The trio added a presence, an aura to the elegant room. "I Remember April," done up tempo featured exciting solos from Garfield and Leitham and Crabb's tasty drumming kept it swinging. The beautiful ballad, "'Round Midnight" was handled with sensitivity by the trio, Garfield's cadenza at the end was breathaking as Leitham bowed the last chord. "Bluesette" had Crabb using brushes for a softer mood, as the piece segued into "All The Things You Are." Everyone got a chance to stretch on this classic tune and they turned it into a shining gem.
